Whilst traditionally we have travelled up to Scotland for our Easter trip, this year we’ll be taking a short flight and visiting the beautiful snowy Julian Alps in Slovenia!!

The Julian Alps are a picturesque Alpine mountain range which stretches from Northern Italy into Slovenia and has many peaks over 2,500 metres (perfect for having reliable snow without altitude sickness causing difficulties!). The area should have something for everyone, from winter walking to more technical mountaineering routes up some majestic mountain peaks. There may also be the option to do some ice climbing (if conditions allow) for any climbers amongst us, and maybe even a quick dip in a lake…

The current plan is to meet at Ljubljana, there are either direct flights from London Stansted to Ljubljana or flights from Manchester to Venice and then a bus (£10ish) over to Ljubljana. We will then hire cars and drive to where we will be staying (somewhere nearish the beautiful town of Bled, about 2 hours from the airport). We’ll probably be staying in Airbnbs a short drive from the mountain routes. The current dates we are looking at are a week between 16th - 23rd March, but when we have numbers and accommodation sorted these dates will be confirmed.

The Ben Lairig Easter trip is open to everyone regardless of experience, we’ve chosen our destination because we feel it gives opportunity for everyone to come and enjoy it. There are a few requirements for the trip to keep everyone safe whilst we are away, and to enable you to make the most of the trip.

  • Winter skills experience (either via our own winter skills course or elsewhere) – i.e. knowledge of ice axe and crampon use!
  • Moderate fitness – 2,700m is high altitude and could present problems to those not prepared
  • proactive nature – Ben Lairig (specifically the committee) are not guides and thus cannot organize what routes you do, that will be your own responsibility (this has been a problem with previous Easter trips)
  • Depending on popularity, we can only take a limited number of people on the trip, if necessary, priority will be given to those who have taken part in other trips to ensure you have experience, as well as the usual first come first served.

Also just a quick note, as with any other trip, the same applies to the Easter trip. It is no requirement for Ben Lairig committee or any other members to act as guides or have a Mountain Leader Qualification. This means you are responsible for your own safety and actions. Many will have good skills and habits they are happy to pass on to you, but any “leading” a member does is on a purely unofficial basis where the ‘leader’ is not responsible for anyone he / she is leading.

We are estimating the cost of the trip come to around £270. Flights should be well less than £100 return, and accommodation is looking to be about £10-15 per night. Adding on insurance (which is compulsory, about £35), food and drink, travel books / maps, this should cost absolutely no more than £340. We will book accommodation and car hire through the club and flights will be your responsibility to book. There may be an additional expense for those hoping to tackle Triglav, the highest mountain in the Julian Alps. It is an absolute classic but would require a night in a mountain hut. As with other winter trips, you will be required to have the kit and gear outlined in the Ben Lairig FunbookThis trip is only open to paid club members. We do our absolute best to keep things as cheap and accessible as possible, if you're worried about finance for the trip let us know asap and we'll see what we can do!

Preferably, we’d like everyone to have a mountain buddy, this doesn’t need to be someone you stick with for the entire week but it makes it a lot easier for us to book accommodation and car hire in small groups, and you can share luggage on the flights to save money. Don’t worry if you haven’t already got an intended mountain buddy, there are still plenty of opportunities at socials and on trips to meet other sexy single mountaineers and pop them the question (free pint for the best proposal).

Sooo, keep your eyes out for the signup on Wednesday evening at 7pm! We'll be asking for a £100 deposit from successful trip applicants, which will be required by Friday 31st January.
