When Oxford University snubbed the prime minister: An eyewitness account
In 1985, Margaret Thatcher had been prime minister for six years. She had been re-elected in 1983 with a landslide victory. However, her alma mater – Oxford – had hitherto not awarded her the customary honorary doctorate. When this issue finally surfaced, it sparked a fierce opposition. Wilhelm Engström, then recipient of a Royal Society postdoctoral fellowship at Oxford, followed this exciting story on site and will recapitulate events that became front-page news across the world.
