Panel discussion: "Georgia at a Crossroads: The Future of Democracy After the 2024 Parliamentary Election”
Östgruppen is turning 20 years this autumn and we celebrate the anniversary with a series of discussions on topics of relevance to us and our focus region. This second event will be devoted to Georgia after the parliamentary elections on October 26, that many regard to be of historic significance. The election is the first after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and is following widespread mass protests against controversial legislative measures, including a Russian-style "foreign agent" law, adopted by the ruling "Georgian Dream" party. The aim of the seminar is to discuss the results of the election, including their implications for democracy and human rights, in short and long term perspectives. The main guests forming the panel for the evening are Tamar Oniani from Georgian human rights NGO "GYLA", political scientist Dr. Per Ekman and Swedish journalist Rasmus Canbäck, newly returned from Georgia.
The format of the discussion is informal and there will be room for the audience to pose questions. Östgruppen will cater for lighter snacks to help everyone through the evening while drinks (only non-alcoholic options available at this cosy venue) will have to be bought on own expenses.
Make sure to register at: no later than the 18th November. However, there are only a limited amount of seats at the venue so don't wait too long.
